Do you know where the Spice King, Adolph Schilling, lived in Oakland? Or the chocolate magnate,
Domingo Ghirardelli? Have you seen the homes of Jack London and Gertrude Stein, or the site of the estate of 20-Mule Team Borax Smith? Join the Oakland Museum of California Docents on a Bicycle Tour this summer. Discover the incredible history of Oakland, its visionaries and its scoundrels.
Bring your bikes, helmets,10th Street museum entrance on the third Sunday of the month. Tours leave promptly at 10 a.m. the tour is about 5 miles long, with few hills, and lasts two hours. A different tour is offered each month. Past tours have visited Fruitvale, Brooklyn, the Port of Oakland, Lake Merritt, Alameda and Arrowhead Marsh.

  • Drive a Bike: Free urban bike safety classes "Summer 2009 Schedule"

Day One: Street Skills classes

3.5-hour classroom course teaches the basics of safe cycling, riding in trafic, equipment, crash avoidance, rights and responsibilities. Adults 14 and over. No bike needed.

Day Two: On-Road instruction

6.5-hour on-road course provides an opportunity to put into practice what was learned in the Day 1 Street Skills class, including emergency maneuvers and riding in various traffic conditions, to test your knowlege of vehicular cycling skills. Bicycle required for Day Two.

May 12 2007, the City of Berkeley Injury Prevention Program holds on an Annual Bike Rodeo on a Saturday in May at San Pablo Park in Berkeley. This event is geared to increase awareness about bicycle safety. This event will involve education games with prizes, informative bike and helmet safety activity trainings, and other resources from injury, prevention organizations. By participation in these games and activities, children "learn by doing" and receive informational, yet fun bike and helmet safety education.
